Frequently Asked Questions

  • I provide individualized, strengths-based treatment using evidence-based practices. What does that even mean though? It means that each client will have a personalized treatment plan that focuses on their strengths in addition to areas for improvement. I collaborate with my clients to make sure our work together is effective. Evidence-based practices are those that have been thoroughly researched and shown to be helpful. The type of therapy I provide will depend on several factors: What are your treatment goals? What is the best intervention to treat that particular issue? What has helped or not helped in the past?

I will likely incorporate some techniques from the following therapeutic modalities into my practice as appropriate. If this sounds like a foreign language to you, don’t worry! We will work together to see what therapy style will be the best fit for you.

    Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

    Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

    Mindfulness

    Harm Reduction Strategies

    Motivational Interviewing

    Trauma-Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp)

    Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy

    Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT)

    Wellness, Management and Recovery (WMR)

    Others as needed

  • I am currently accepting remote therapy (video) clients who live in North Carolina, and in-person therapy clients for folks able to meet in my office in Durham, NC.

To set up an appointment, please feel free to call me at (919) 351-2283, send me an email at hillary@hillarylittle.com, or fill out the Contact Form on the last tab of this website.

  • It’s really important for clients to feel comfortable, secure and safe in therapy. Knowing what to expect can be a helpful way to reduce anxiety about meeting a therapist for the first time. I start initial sessions by introducing myself and reviewing some basics about therapy, including the length of sessions, fees, rules surrounding confidentiality and answering any questions the client has. I then invite the client to introduce themselves and ask some version of the million dollar question - “So, what brings you in today?” This is an opportunity for a client to tell me a little bit about themselves and some of the things they’re hoping to address in therapy. If you’re not sure, that’s ok too. Trust your instincts on this one - if something just isn’t right, I can help clarify your treatment goals.

It can be really helpful to know what has been going well and what really hasn’t been. It is up to the client to decide how much they would like to share, and it’s my job to build rapport, earn trust and convey a safe, kind and nonjudgmental environment. From there we will create a treatment plan which will include frequency of sessions (usually weekly or every other week) as well as therapeutic approach.

  • Yes. I offer both in-person therapy and remote, video-based therapy services through a secure web platform. Virtual therapy has been shown to be as effective as traditional in-person therapy, but offers increased convenience and access for individuals seeking therapy.

Of note, I am currently only seeing people in person on Wednesdays.

  • I am currently in-network with Aetna and United Healthcare/Optum and am considered out-of-network for other insurers. If you are uninsured, or your insurance is not listed here, you can pay out-of-pocket for services.

If you are hoping to use an out-of-network plan you will want to call your insurer and ask the following questions:

    • Do I have mental health insurance benefits?

    • What is my out-of-network mental health benefit reimbursement rate?

    • Do I have a deductible and has it been met?

This practice operates on a “fee-for-service” model which means that fees are collected at the beginning of each session.

If you have an insurance plan that is not accepted by this practice, I am happy to provide a document at the end of each session called a “super bill.” This is something clients can submit directly to their insurance companies to get full- or partial-reimbursement for their therapy sessions.
